BJP Hits Out At Karnataka’s Minority Quota For Housing Move: 'Religious Appeasement Paramount For Congress'

The BJP condemned Karnataka's government for increasing minority housing reservation from 10% to 15%, calling religious appeasement as paramount for the Congress and Gandhi family.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has sharply criticised the Karnataka government's decision to raise the reservation for minority communities under state housing schemes from 10% to 15%, calling it a violation of constitutional principles.

Reacting to the Cabinet decision, BJP national spokesperson and Member of Parliament Dr Sambit Patra said, "Reservation on the basis of religion is unconstitutional. Those who roam around with the Constitution book in their pockets are tearing the Constitution to shreds. This decision is the biggest example of that. Religious appeasement is paramount for the Congress and the Gandhi family."

The Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday approved the proposal, which was backed by Housing Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan. Defending the move, Home Minister G Parameshwara clarified that the decision was taken based on socio-economic needs and not on religious grounds.

Zameer Ahmad Khan explained that the move to allocate 15 per cent reservation in housing schemes for the minority community isn’t a recent development. It was first proposed in 2019 by a cabinet sub-committee set up under the Congress-JD(S) coalition government, led at the time by then Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.

He further clarified that, in line with the Sachar Committee report, the central government has already been offering 15 per cent reservation to minorities in housing schemes. The decision at the state level reflects a long-standing demand to replicate that model—prompting its formal adoption now.

Later, Karnataka Housing and Minority Welfare Minister Zameer Ahmad Khan said, as per a report on PTI, "The cabinet sub-committee that was constituted during the 2019 coalition government has made this recommendation. Now, the proposal has been brought before the cabinet and approved. The existing reservation of 10 per cent has now been increased to 15 per cent."
