Hijab Row | Pragya Thakur Fuels Controversy, Says No Need For Hijab In India

The statement by BJP leader came hours after Karnataka government on Wednesday reopened pre-university, degree and diploma colleges under tight security arrangements.

New Delhi: The firebrand Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Bhopal MP on Wednesday stroked yet another controversy after she said that there is no need for hijab (headscarves) in India and Muslim women should wear it at home as they have troubles in their homes.

Thakur's remarks came amid the ongoing uproar over hijab in Karnataka and other parts of the country. The BJP leader has said that there is no need for hijab in India as women are worshiped in the country.

"Wear hijab in madrasas but it will not work in school and college. Muslim women should wear hijab at home because they have trouble in their homes," Thakur said.

The statement by BJP leader came hours after Karnataka government on Wednesday reopened pre-university, degree and diploma colleges under tight security arrangements.

A chaotic situation prevailed in several pre-university colleges in Karnataka as the Burqa-clad Muslim students were denied entry citing a High Court order. The colleges were opened on Wednesday after remaining shut for a week owing to the Hijab row.

Though the majority of students attended classes as per the guidelines of their colleges and universities, many of them who refused to take off their hijab were sent back.

The day saw a section of Muslim students remaining adamant not to remove the Burqa, let alone Hijab, the Islamic scarves.

The High Court, in its interim order pending consideration of all petitions related to the hijab row, last week restrained the students from wearing saffron shawls, scarves, hijab and any religious flag within the classroom.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra warned that the court order on uniform has to be strictly followed and that there is no question of students or anyone demanding wearing hijab or saffron shawls.
