Bengal Will Soon Have New Guv Who Will Follow Dhankhar's Footsteps: BJP

La Ganesan, who took oath as the new governor of West Bengal in July this year, shares a cordial relationship with the state government.

New Delhi: West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar on Wednesday claimed that the state would soon get a new governor who would follow the footsteps of former Raj Bhavan occupant Jagdeep Dhankhar, who had frequent run-ins with the TMC government.

Prior to his election as the Vice President of India, Dhankhar was the governor of West Bengal for nearly three years and, on many occasions, had engaged in tussles with the Mamata Banerjee government over the law and order situation and other issues in the state.

La Ganesan, who took oath as the new governor of West Bengal in July this year, shares a cordial relationship with the state government. Ganesan, also the governor of Manipur, has been given the additional charge of West Bengal.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee travelled to Tamil Nadu earlier this month to attend a family function at the invitation of La Ganesan.

"We expect that very soon, West Bengal will have a new governor. And we believe that he would follow former governor Jagdeep Dhankhar's footsteps," Majumdar told a news channel.

According to West Bengal BJP sources, the state unit is not happy with the functioning of the Raj Bhavan, especially during the Akhil Giri episode when despite seeking the governor's appointment for three days, the BJP legislative party did not get any appointment as he was not in town.

Senior BJP leader and MP Saumitra Khan recently said that Dhankhar was "very vocal" on various issues, and the party misses him.

"The former governor was very vocal on various issues. But the present governor is not very vocal. We miss Jagdeep Dhankhar. Akhil Giri made derogatory remarks against the President, but the Raj Bhavan has maintained silence on the issue," he had said.

Giri recently faced flak for his remarks on the looks of President Droupadi Murmu. After a video clip of his comments went viral, he apologised for it.

Reacting to the BJP leadership's remark on Raj Bhavan, the ruling TMC said the comments prove the saffron camp had turned the Governor's office into an "extension of its state headquarters".

"The BJP, since 2019, has turned Raj Bhavan into a party office, and we are all aware of the former governor's role. The present governor is following the rules and regulations. The BJP must understand that the governor's office is not their party office," TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said.
