Assam-Mizoram Border Clash: State Chief Secretaries, DGPs To Discuss Peace Formula Today

At least five people were killed as the border dispute between Assam and Mizoram suddenly turned into a bloody clash on Monday. 60 others, including a superintendent of police, were injured.

New Delhi: The Central Government has called a meeting of Chief Secretaries and DGPs of both the states today in the light of violence on the border of Assam and Mizoram. The meeting is likely to be held at 11 am today. Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla will preside over the meeting called to discuss the sudden escalation of violence along the Assam-Mizoram border.

Peace formula is likely to be prepared in this meeting of Chief Secretaries and DGPs so that violence does not happen again on the border of these two states. The Central Government is in regular touch with the Governments of Assam and Mizoram. The government is trying to calm the situation. On Monday, five Assam Police personnel were killed while 50 others, including a Superintendent of Police, were injured when Mizoram Police opened fire on Assam officials.

Violence along the interstate border

The 164 km long border of Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi districts of Barak Valley of Assam is adjacent to Aizawl, Kolasib, and Mamit districts of Mizoram. Violence broke out along the inter-state border, and five Assam Police personnel were killed during the past few weeks amid allegations of encroachment on each other's territory and sporadic clashes on both sides. Just two days before this violent incident, Home Minister Amit Shah held talks with the Chief Ministers of the northeastern states and stressed the need to resolve the pending border dispute.

The Assam government announced three days of state mourning from Tuesday on the death of five policemen and a civilian in clashes with Mizoram over the border dispute. Meanwhile, tension prevails along the Assam-Mizoram border, and people from the bordering Cachar district have threatened an economic blockade of the neighboring state. The Assam government issued an order stating that the national flag would remain at half-mast during the state mourning and no public entertainment programs would be held.
