Assam: Banned Militant Outfit Ulfa-I's Cadre Apprehended With Weapons In Joint Op By India Army, Police

The joint operation was conducted by the Indian Army and Sonari police after input was received regarding the presence of a suspected ULFA-I cadre in Towkok.

New Delhi: A cadre of banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom - Independent (ULFA-I) was apprehended with weapons in a joint operation by the Indian Army and Assam police. The weapons were seized in Assam's Charaideo district.

"Troops of Joypur Battalion of Red Shield Division under the aegis of Spear Corps apprehended the ULFA-I cadre from the Sonari area in Charaideo district on Saturday night," a statement by the Indian Army informed, as quoted by news agency ANI.

The joint operation was conducted by the Indian Army and Sonari police after input was received regarding the presence of a suspected ULFA-I cadre in the general area of Towkok, on Saturday.

“The swift action of the Security Forces resulted in the apprehension of one ULFA-I cadre along with one 7.65 mm pistol, three live rounds and one magazine,” the statement added.

The apprehended ULFA-I cadre was handed over to Assam Police.

Further investigations are underway.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA), earlier this month, led multiple searches at 16 different locations in 7 districts of Assam in connection with the ULFA recruitment case, an NIA official told ANI.

According to the ANI, digital devices, live ammunition and incriminating documents and literature related to ULFA (an illegal terrorist organisation) were seized during the searches.

Meanwhile, NIA conducted multiple searches including at Kamrup, Nalbari, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sadiya, Charaideo, and Sibasagar.

NIA initiated the probe about the activities of ULFA including recruitment of youth in ULFA, extortion of money for strengthening ULFA and radicalisation of youth for unlawful activities and their training at camps based across the Indo-Myanmar border in Myanmar.
