Akharas Call Off Amrit Snan On Mauni Amavasya After Stampede At Maha Kumbh Mela

Nearly 5 crore people reached the Maha Kumbh Mela on Tuesday, a day before the Mauni Amavasya, as per estimates of the Uttar Pradesh government, which expects the crowd to be around 10 crore today.

Maha Kumbh Stampede: The President of All India Akhara Parishad said that all 13 Akharas will not take part in the Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya because of the stampede that took place around 1 am on Thursday. "The way the incident happened today is very sad so we have decided not to take a bath on Mauni Amavasya, now we will take Amrit bath on Basant Panchami," Shri Mahant Ravindra Puri Ji Maharaj said.

At least 10 people are feared dead in the stampede, as per reports.

Nearly 5 crore people reached the Maha Kumbh Mela on Tuesday, a day before the Mauni Amavasya, according to estimates of the Uttar Pradesh government, which expects the crowd to be around 10 crore on Wednesday.

Akharas belonging to the three sects 'Sanyasi, Bairagi, and Udaseen' take the holy dip in a set sequence. The seers and saints, including the ash-smeared Nagas, then immerse themselves in the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers on special bathing dates like the Mauni Amavasya.

The next Amrit Snan will be held on Basant Panchmi.

Meanwhile, Spiritual leader Devkinandan Thakur appealed to the people to skip the snan today. "I did not go to the Sangam Ghat because the size of the crowds over there is massive... I appeal to the people that not insist on taking a bath at the Sangam Ghat only. The entire Ganga and Yamuna rivers are 'Amrit' right now," he said.
