27-year-old jumps into Ganga for making video, dies
New Delhi: A 27-year-old man jumped into the raging waters of the Ganga near Haridwar, allegedly at the behest of his friends who wanted to record the "dramatic act" on their cell phones, sank without a trace.
Reportedly, the man, had consumed liquor and was initially hesitant but after being provoked on by his friends, finally dived into the river and got swept away in the river.
The shocking video made by his friends has gone viral, with many people sharing it on social media and also some TV channels broadcasting it.
The incident took place on Tuesday when Ashish Chauhan, a resident of Gandhmirpur in Bhadrabad, Haridwar, took the deadly plunge in Gangnahar. His body is yet to be found, more than 48 hours after the incident took place.
On a regular Tuesday afternoon, Chauhan and his friends, Ashwini Chauhan and Balraj Kumar made their way through the woods to the canal. The trio reportedly, consumed liquor after settling down and then decided to go for a swim and shoot it on their mobile phones.
Chauhan seemed a bit reluctant at first but then decided to jump anyway. When he did not come out for a long time, the two friends got worried and tried to search him. But when all their efforts got failed, the two reported the matter at the nearest police station.
The police along with a team of jal police, started a search operation but could not locate the body even until Thursday. Chauhan's friends were shocked by the incident, as according to them he was a good swimmer, and the group would regularly swim in the Gangnahar.
According to the reports, the station officer, Amar Chandra Sharma, said, "It appears that the gushing waters carried the body away."
Sharma also added that Chauhan's family has not registered a police complaint. Instead they had handed over a letter to the team of police saying that it was a mere accident and they do not blame anyone for the man's death.
