Deep Sidhu Gets Bail From Delhi High Court In Republic Day Violence Case

Deep Sidhu Gets Bail: Actor-activist Deep Sidhu, accused of violence in the national capital on Republic Day, has been granted bail by a local court in Delhi

A Delhi Court today granted bail to Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu in the case concerning the violence that took place at Red Fort on January 26 during the farmers' tractor rally. The court on Monday had reserved its order on the bail application of actor-activist Deep Sidhu, arrested in connection with the Red Fort violence on Republic Day.

Sidhu was arrested in February from Karnal in Haryana by the Delhi Police Special Cell days after a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh for information leading to his arrest was announced.

The public prosecutor representing the Delhi Police claimed that Sidhu participated in the protest with the intention to create violence and disregard the national flag and that he was the main instigator of unlawful assembly.

Sidhu's counsel told the court that his mere presence did not make him part of unlawful assembly and that he was an honest citizen who was part of a protest.

In the last hearing, Deep Sidhu had submitted in the court that he did not instigate agitating farmers to go to Red Fort on January 26. Sidhu also said that the call for protest was given by farmer leaders and that he was not a member of the farmer union. His lawyer submitted in the court that there’s no evidence that Sidhu had mobilised the crowd.

As per Sidhu, he was not even present at the Red Fort when the violence took place. He maintained that he had not called for any tractor rally and that there was nothing on record to show that he indulged in violence or instigated it.

Sidhu also denied the prosecution's allegation that he instigated a farmer to hoist the Nishan Sahib flag at Red Fort.

According to Bar and Bench, the court said that the investigation was still in progress and it would violate Sidhu's fundamental right to life and liberty guaranteed if he was denied bail only on the ground that the Police was yet to establish the identity of the other members of the unlawful assembly.

Chaotic scenes were witnessed at the Red Fort in Delhi during the farmers' tractor parade as some miscreants clashed with the police. As violent scenes were being reported from several parts of Delhi, many protesters reached the Red Fort and entered the monument.
