New God Of War Spin-Off Coming This Year? New Leak Suggests Incoming Side Story Set In Greece

The God of War franchise, which is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary, recently received a free update for God of War Ragnarök.

A fresh entry in the God of War franchise might be on the horizon, with reports hinting at a new game set in the series' original Greek mythology. Speculation suggests that this could be a smaller spin-off rather than a full-fledged sequel, with a potential release later in 2025.

A Return to Greek Mythology?

The God of War franchise, which is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary, recently received a free update for God of War Ragnarök. However, while developer Santa Monica Studio has remained silent about its next major project, industry insider Jeff Grubb has sparked excitement with claims that a new Greek-era God of War game is in the works.

OK. Everyone keeps asking about this, so I've tried to find out more: There's still a Greek God of War thing coming out this year, but it's not a remaster collection. It's a new side-story project.

“Everyone keeps asking about this, so I've tried to find out more: There's still a Greek God of War thing coming out this year, but it's not a remaster collection. It's a new side-story project,” Grubb shared on Bluesky.

Not a Remaster, But Something New

Grubb dismissed earlier rumours about a potential remastered collection of the older God of War titles. Instead, his sources point to a fresh entry in the franchise that will likely revisit Kratos' past in Greece.

“I was never told about a Remaster collection, but I asked a source about the rumours (that I saw were focused on a collection) and they told me that nothing God of War would happen at the State of Play but something could show up at the anniversary,” Grubb added.

Sony and Santa Monica Studio Remain Silent

Despite the growing buzz, Santa Monica Studio has yet to confirm or deny the reports. The developer wrapped up the Norse saga with God of War Ragnarök in 2022, and while creative director Cory Barlog has expressed interest in exploring other mythologies, no official announcements have been made.

Sony, meanwhile, marked God of War's 20th anniversary with a free Ragnarök update, new merchandise, and a themed exhibition. However, there has been no word on the future of the franchise. The company recently scrapped two live-service projects, one of which was rumored to be a God of War multiplayer title.

Additionally, Santa Monica Studio is reportedly working on an entirely new IP, according to a developer's LinkedIn profile. Whether this means Kratos will take a break from the gaming scene remains to be seen, but fans are eagerly awaiting an official update from the studio.
