16th Lok Sabha: Lower House adjourned sine die; Snippet of total time, sittings and bill passed since 2014

As the final session of the 16th Lok Sabha ended on Wednesday, this could surely be considered as one of the most happening and memorable tenures in the history of Indian politics.

16th Lok Sabha: As the final session of the 16th Lok Sabha ended on Wednesday, this could surely be considered as one of the most happening and memorable tenures in the history of Indian politics. Controlled by the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre, the outgoing Lok Sabha was constituted on May 18, 2014 after the saffron party won the 2014 General elections with a landslide victory. The first session of this Lok Sabha took place from June 4 to June 11, 2014. The current Lok Sabha saw 315 Members of Parliament (MPs) taking the oath for the first time, which is 58 per cent of the total members. During the 16th Lok Sabha, 180 bills were passed and 45 ordinances promulgated. The outgoing Lok Sabha worked for a total of 1,615 hours, which is 20 per cent more than the 15th Lok Sabha when the UPA was in power. However, this was 40 per cent lower than the average of all full-term Lok Sabhas, which is 2,689 hours. According to data compiled by PRS Legislative Research, the present Lok Sabha during its various sessions between June, 2014 and February this year sat for 331 days. On average, past full term Lok Sabhas sat for 468 days. Here a look a snipped of total time, number of sittings and bills passed during the 16th Lok Sabha (from 2014-2019) Time Lost during 16th Lok Sabha Lost time in LS - 422 hours 30 minutes Days lost (considering 6 hr of daily work) – 70 days Money lost due to disruptions – Rs 633.75 Cr Number of sittings per session during 16th Lok Sabha Total -321 sittings in 16 sessions (till Jan 8, 2019) Average – 20 sittings per session Longest session - 4th session was the longest with 35 sittings (Feb 23, 2015 to March 20, 2015 and April 20, 2015 to May 13, 2015) Bills during 16th Lok Sabha Bills introduced – 216 Bills passed – 200 Percentage of bills passed – 93 per cent of introduced bills passed Most number of bills passed – 24 bills passed in fourth session (Feb 23, 2015 to March 20, 2015 and April 20, 2015 to May 13, 2015) For Rajya Sabha, the number of sittings were 329 and it passed 154 bills. The productivity was 68 per cent, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said. According to the PRS data, Rajya Sabha lost 36 per cent of its scheduled time during the tenure of the 16th Lok Sabha. In the 15th and 14th Lok Sabhas, it lost 32 per cent and 14 per cent of its scheduled time, respectively.
