National Women's Day In India: Celebrating The Birth Anniversary Of The 'Nightingale Of India', Sarojini Naidu
National Women's Day is celebrated in the honour of Sarojini Naidu who was a proponent of women's emancipation.
New Delhi: Today marks the birth anniversary of poet and political activist Sarojini Naidu who is known for championing the Women's Rights and her contributions to the freedom struggle in India. She was dubbed 'Nightingale of India' for her lyrical poems. Sarojini Naidu born to a Bengali family of scholars and poets in Hyderabad on February 13, 1879 and was a follower of Mahatma Gandhi and his idea of Swaraj or self-governance. She began writing at the age of 12.
Between the years 1915 and 1918, she travelled to different parts of India and delivered lectures on social welfare, emancipation of women and nationalism. In 1917, she helped establish the Women's Indian Association (WIA); the same year, Naidu accompanied her colleague Annie Besant, who was the president of Home Rule League and Women's Indian Association and presented the universal suffrage in front of the Joint Select Committee in London, United Kingdom.
Sarojini Naidu was one of the most prominent figures be a part of the Civil Disobedience Movement and the Quit India Movement which were led by Mahatma Gandhi.
