Farmers' Protest: Govt Extends Internet Suspension At Singhu, Ghazipur & Tikri Till Feb 2

The internet services will continue to remain suspended in the areas of Singhu, Ghazipur, and Tikri and their adjoining areas in Delhi from 23:00 Hours on January 31 to 23:00 Hours on February 2.

In order to maintain law and order in the national capital amid the ongoing farmers' protest, the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday extended the suspension of mobile internet services till 11 pm February 2 at Delhi's Singhu, Ghazipur, and Tikri borders.

In an order issued today, the Home Ministry said, "In exercise of the power conferred under Sub-rule 1 of Rule 2 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) rules 2017 and in the interest of maintaining public safety and averting public emergency, it is necessary and expedient to order the temporary suspension of Internet services in the areas of Singhu, Ghazipur, and Tikri and their adjoining areas in the NCT of Delhi from 23:00 Hours on January 31 to 23:00 Hours on February 2."

With the situation at the three protesting sites continuing to remain tense, the government had earlier imposed suspension of internet services at the three border points and their adjoining areas on January 29 which was effective till 11 pm on January 31.

The step was taken in an endeavor to “maintain public safety and averting public emergency” under Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules 2017.

Thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have been camping at Delhi’s borders since November 25 last year to protest against the three farm laws enacted by the centre. The farmers fear that three agricultural bills would lead to abolishment of the MSP besides giving an upper hand to the corporates.
