Background
Coronavirus LIVE, Thursday, August 5: As the Kerala government came out with a fresh set of relaxed lockdown norms on Wednesday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the state registered 22,414 new Covid cases after 1,97,092 samples were sent for testing in the past 24 hours.
On Tuesday, 23,676 people had turned positive.
Vijayan, in a statement, said that there were 1,76,048 active cases after another 19,478 people turned negative.
The day's test positivity rate was 11.37, against Tuesday's 11.87 per cent.
On Wednesday, there were another 108 Covid deaths, taking the death toll to 17,211.
The WHO on Wednesday called for a moratorium on Covid-19 vaccine booster shots until at least the end of September to address the drastic inequity in dose distribution between rich and poor nations.
World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called on the countries and companies controlling the supply of doses to change gear and ensure more vaccines to less wealthy states.
“I understand the concern of all governments to protect their people from the Delta variant. But we cannot accept countries that have already used most of the global supply of vaccines using even more of it, while the world’s most vulnerable people remain unprotected," Tedros told a press conference.
“We need an urgent reversal, from the majority of vaccines going to high-income countries, to the majority going to low-income countries."
