SC To Hear Pleas Challenging Electoral Bond Scheme

The Supreme Court will hear a batch of petitions challenging laws capable of issuing election bonds on October 14, which allows anonymous funding of political parties.

The bench of Justices B R Gavai and B V Nagarathna will hear the petitions.

An electoral bond is a tool of a promissory note or carrier bond nature that can be purchased by any person, company, firm or individuals' union, provided that person or body is a citizen of India or is corporate or established in India.

Bonds, which are in many value classes, are released to political parties for the purpose of contributing money to political parties in their current plan in the country.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the NGO, on April 5 had mentioned the matter before the then CJI N V Ramana saying the issue was critical and needed an urgent hearing.

The top court had agreed to list the NGO's plea for hearing but it did not come up before any court.
