2019 Volvo S60 Revealed, Will Rival A4, C-Class And 3 Series
The third-generation Volvo S60 is a beautiful looking sedan that looks quite distinct compared to its German rivals!
Volvo has taken wraps off the third-generation S60. It is based on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture, like other cars from the 60 and 90 series such as the V60, XC60, S90 and the XC90. However, the S60 will be the first car to be manufactured at the Swedish carmaker’s first ever facility in the US. Located in South Carolina, this facility will also serve as the export hub for the latest sedan.
The new S60 looks unmistakably Volvo as the automaker’s design language has made its cars look virtually the same. And that’s not a bad thing as Volvos nowadays are quite appealing. The new S60 looks beautiful and pretty distinct when compared to its German rivals such as the Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the BMW 3 Series. The S60 borrows a lot of design cues from the S90. In fact, it looks like a miniature version of Volvo’s flagship sedan.
All Volvos share an identical cabin layout and the S60 is no different. It gets vertically places touchscreen that runs Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system. The 4G-equipped system supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The third-gen S60 comes with a strong suite of safety features too. It packs Volvo Cars’ Pilot Assist system (supports the driver with steering, acceleration and braking on well-marked roads up to 130km/h), City Safety (detects and avoids collision with vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and large animals through autonomous braking up to 60kmph), Run-Off-Road protection and mitigation, and road sign information. Also on offer are lane keeping aid, cross traffic alert with brake support and rear collision warning. Expect these class-leading safety systems to make their way to the India-spec sedan since they can already be found on the upcoming XC40 and other models sold here.
The new S60 is the first Volvo that won’t be offered with a diesel engine. Instead, it will be available in two petrol-only options and two plug-in hybrid versions.
A 2.0-litre forced induction petrol engine does duty on the T5 and T6 versions, while T6 Twin Engine and T8 Twin Engine are plug-in hybrids (powered by T6 petrol engine).
The plug-in hybrid models offer AWD (all-wheel-drive) setup. An 8-speed automatic transmission is standard across the range.

The T8 Polestar Engineered version gets engine upgrades that help it offer extra power and torque (415PS/670Nm; 15PS and 30Nm more than T8). It is for the first-time that the S60 is getting an electrified Polestar performance-oriented version.

The previous-gen S60 Polestar, for instance, was powered by the Drive-E 2.0-litre supercharged and turbocharged petrol engine (367PS and 470Nm), which is part of the T8 Twin Engine powertrain. The old S60 Polestar is currently on sale in India, so we expect Volvo to bring the new-gen version here as well.
The third-generation S60 is likely to be introduced in India early next year. While the regular version (probably with T5) is expected to retail between Rs 40-50 lakh, the new electrified Polestar version is likely to get a sticker price well over Rs 60 lakh. Although the S60 will initially be offered as a CBU (completely built unit), it could be locally assembled at a later stage at Volvo’s facility in Bengaluru, just like its SPA-based siblings, the XC90 and S90.
