The Vespa Elettrica, which was first showcased at the 2016 EICMA, and then again in 2017, is finally ready to hit the production line. The e-scooter will be produced at Vespa’s historic Pontedera manufacturing plant, which has been producing Vespa scooters since 1946. Bookings for the begin in October, albeit for European customers, through Piaggio’s dedicated website. The company has further stated that it will expand orders to the US and Asian markets in early 2019.

Since its first iteration, the scooter has received some visual changes in the form of new alloy wheels. Although the design language of the scooter sticks to the same classic retro look that Vespa is famous for, it’s quite modern underneath.

Powering the e-scooter is a 4kW electric motor which is capable of delivering 2kW of continuous power and a peak power of 4kW (5.4PS). Piaggio says the Vespa Elettrica’s performance is superior to that of a 50cc scooter. Although it’s not really impressive by any means, in the company’s defence, the scooter does look sleek.

Vespa also claims that the scooter has a range of 100km, which is good enough for your urban commute. However, if you opt for the ‘X’ variant, it really outshines its competition with an impressive claimed range of 200km! This is done by placing a generator next to the lithium-ion battery, which essentially amplifies its range. As good as it sounds, the range-extender, which is essentially a 4-stroke petrol engine, will only be used to recharge the battery for optimal range.

The e-scooter gets two modes - ECO and Power. While former ensures gradual acceleration, the latter offers the entire power output right from the get-go. Top speed for the scooter is restricted to 30kmph and it also gets a 'Reverse Assist Mode'. It also features a colour Multimedia TFT screen that allows you to sync your smartphone. The scooter will be offered in a single chrome grey colour along with optional extras for further customisation.
