Tamil Nadu is popular for all the hustle and bustle in its cities, magnificent monuments but there are a few lesser-known places that offers beauty and historical richness of culture. Other than the typical tourist spot, some hidden gems too are waiting to be discovered. They are right ranging from the placid views of Meghamalai for its misty hills to a pristine coastal town in Tranquebar and enchanting Kolli Hills.

These places are ideal for anyone looking to step off the usual path and discover a different side of Tamil Nadu, rich in quiet charm and captivating landscapes.

Pichavaram:

Pichavaram is the second largest mangrove forest in the world. It is located in the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu. This small village is flanked by the Vellar and Coleroon estuaries, creating a unique ecosystem. Visitors can explore the mangrove forests through boat rides, with options like motorboats and rowboats available for navigating the scenic waterways. 

Dhanushkodi:

Dhanushkodi is situated on the edge of Pamban Island. Indian Ocean converges with Bay of Bengal there. The town is characterised by serene beaches and coral reefs. It is also of mythological importance because it is said to be the place where Lord Ram's army built the Ram Setu bridge to Sri Lanka. The scintillating views of blue waters and sand flats make this a memorable destination, with a glimpse of flamingos once in a while.

This is an ideal hill station for a quick break from the bustle of cities like Bengaluru and Chennai. The major attractions are Swamimalai Hills-the highest point with a scenic view and two serene lakes, Punganoor and Nilavoor, where paddle boating is possible. The region boasts ancient temples and an observatory through which you can go stargazing. 

Kolli Hills:

Kolli Hills is a place for a mild climate, for the favorite spot of hikers and nature lovers. It is 1,000-1,300 meters above sea level. Scenic spots include Agasagangai and Puliancholai Falls. A relaxing boat ride on Vasalurpatty Lake or the ancient Siddhar Caves can be visited after a scenic trek. Selur is a very popular viewpoint that offers breathtaking panoramas.

Once a historical port city, Poompuhar, also referred to as Kaveri Poompattinam, is the ancient Chola dynasty capital. Today, the sandy stretches of this beach make it a main attraction and people visit to enjoy their long sandy shores. Near the Silapathikaram Art Gallery, located in Tamil Nadu, there is an exhibit about the Sangam era.

Meghamalai is a hilly, green tea estate place where nature lovers visit to enjoy serenity. Winding roads on the way through hills and fog and a breeze leads one to the destination itself. It has the attraction like Meghamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Meghamalai Falls, and the Suruli Falls. A picture-postcard view offers an excellent opportunity to get the sight of elephants and deers roaming around.
