Renowned Yoga Guru Sharath Jois, Who Taught Madonna, Dies In The US

Renowed India Origin Yoga Guru R. Sharath Jois, known for teaching Ashtanga to students globally, including in Mysuru, passed away at 53 in Virginia, USA, on November 11, 2024.

Sharath Jois, a prominent Ashtanga yoga teacher who brought his grandfather’s yoga style to international acclaim, has passed away at 53. He was the grandson of the legendary Krishna Pattabhi Jois, the founder of Ashtanga.

The renowned and influential yoga guru has also mentored top celebrities, such as Madonna and actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

Early Life And Journey Into Yoga

Sharath Jois was born on September 29, 1971, in Mysuru and began studying electronics and earned a diploma in the field. But his true calling led him to yoga, a path that he chose after being inspired by his grandfather, Krishna Pattabhi Jois, the legendary founder of Ashtanga Yoga.

At the age of 19, Sharath began studying yoga under his grandfather's tutelage, immersing himslef in the classes and deepening his practice. This wonderful experience also gave him patience, dedication, and devotion necessary to teach others effectively. This played a significant role in shaping Sharath's understanding of yoga as a spiritual and physical practice. 

Sharath Jois took it upon himself to preserve and spread the Ashtanga tradition of yoga. He went on to teach students all over the world and founded the Sharath Yoga Center in Hebbal, located on the outskirts of Mysuru. His center became a place for dedicated practitioners to deepen their yoga practice and learn directly from him, carrying forward the legacy of Ashtanga Yoga on a global stage.

Yoga Community Mourns The Loss Of Sharath Jois

Shivaprakash Guruji, Working President of the Federation of Yoga and President of Paramahamsa Yoga Mahavidyalaya in Mysuru, expressed deep sorrow over Sharath Jois' passing, calling it an irreparable loss to the yoga community.

Dr. Murthy stated, "Sharath Jois played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting the legacy of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, a tradition founded by his grandfather, Pattabhi Jois, who had notable disciples like pop icon Madonna."

The exact cause of Sharath Jois's death has not been officially confirmed, but reports suggest he suffered a heart attack while hiking near the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. His sister, Sharmila Mahesh, confirmed the sad news of his sudden passing through an Instagram post.
