The Significance Of Rath Yatra:

The annual Rath Yatra marks Lord Jagannath's symbolic journey to his aunt’s abode at Gundicha Temple, about 3 km from the main sanctum. Devotees believe pulling the rope of the chariots washes away sins and brings divine blessings. This journey is not merely a procession but a spiritual event deeply rooted in the soul of Hindu tradition.

Major Rituals And Traditions:

The day begins with the Pahandi ritual, in which the deities are carried out in a rhythmic sway amid beats of drums and conches. Prior to this, rituals like Snana Yatra and Anasara are observed, during which the deities are bathed with 108 pots of water and kept in seclusion due to assumed illness.

This year, the pulling of the chariots is being done under tight security with barricades in place. Devotees are permitted to touch the ropes from designated safe zones, ensuring a peaceful celebration while upholding traditions. The Bahuda Yatra, or return journey, will be held nine days later.

Rath Yatra Festivals Across India:

  • Baripada, Odisha: Known as ‘Dwitiya Srikshetra,’ it allows women to pull Devi Subhadra’s chariot.
  • ISKCON Kolkata, West Bengal: The world’s second-largest Rath Yatra, drawing lakhs through major city streets.
  • Mahesh, Hooghly: Bengal’s oldest Rath Yatra, dating back to 1397.
  • Keonjhar, Odisha: Features a 72-foot-tall chariot, taller than Puri’s, adding local grandeur.
