International Yoga Day 2022: Dos and Don'ts For Beginners Starting With Yoga Asanas

New Delhi: International Yoga day is celebrated on June 21 every year to spread awareness about the traditional Yoga practices and emphasise their impact on promoting a satisfying lifestyle. On September 27, 2014, PM Narendra Modi for the first time proposed the idea of the same during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly. The draft resolution passed by India was backed by record 177 nations and then June 21 was chosen to be the day for celebrating Yoga. June 21, 2015, was celebrated as International Yoga Day for the first time.

Yoga is not restricted to religion and is not just about a set of exercises for physical health - it goes beyond these boundaries to promote spirituality and mindfulness. However, there are basic guidelines to follow when it comes to practising yoga, especially for beginners.

Check Do’s And Don't Of Yoga Asanas For Beginners

Firstly, it is said that a yoga practitioner has known about ‘Śauca’ which means cleanliness. It is an important prerequisite for Yoga practice, and basically includes cleanliness of surroundings, body and mind.

Remember that asanas should be practised on an empty stomach. Consume a small amount of honey in lukewarm water if you feel weak. Also, note that your bladder and bowels should be empty before you start Yogic practices.

Yogic practices shall be performed slowly, in a relaxed manner, with awareness of the body and breath. In order to avoid injuries, it is important that you warm up and opt for stretches before asanas to avoid injuries.

Try to wear comfortable clothing such as light and comfortable cotton clothes to facilitate easy movement of the body. Use a mat with a good grip to do Yogasanas.

Take a note of breathing while doing Yogasanas. Always end the yoga session with relaxation techniques to cool down

Also, don't hold your breath unless it is specially mentioned to do so during the practice.

Breathing should be always through the nostrils unless instructed otherwise.

Do not hold the body tight or give undue jerks to the body.

Always practice as per your capacity as it takes some time to get good results, so remain persistent and regular in practice.

DONT'S:

Never practice yoga in a state of exhaustion, illness, in a hurry or in acute stress conditions.

Never perform yoga immediately after meals. You need to wait at least two to three hours after a large meal.

Don’t shower or drink water or eat food for 30 minutes after doing yoga.

Refrain from doing yoga during illness, surgeries, or any sprains or fractures.

Also, don’t practice yoga in adverse and extreme weather conditions (too hot, too cold or humid)
