History behind Father’s Day
Father’s Day was first celebrated in 1910 in the United States. It was founded on the third Sunday of June, at Spokane, Washington YMCA on June 19, 1910, by Sonora Smart Dodd. Sonora was aware of how Anna Jarvis founded Mother’s Day in honour of her mother and that’s when she suggested the pastor of her Church about a similar day to honor fathers too.
Her father was a Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart who took care of six children in Arkansas as a single parent. She wanted to celebrate the day on her father’s birthday ie June 5, but due to the Church’s time constraints, the celebration were deferred to the third Sunday of June.
Since then, the day has been celebrated every year in as many as 111 countries. In some countries like Australia and New Zealand, however, it is said that Father’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday in the month of September.
