Diwali 2022: Why Do People Play Cards During Diwali? All You Need To Know

Custom of Playing Cards are well popular among the people in the night of Festival Diwali. They believe this will bring good luck and grace of Goddess Lakshmi for the whole year.

The Most auspicious season of the year is here and we are all set to enjoy this long festive series. The five-day festive season of Diwali is celebrated in Kartika month. Diwali is the time people prefer to do heavy investments, purchases, and most of their money-related work.

People believe this will bring the grace of Goddess Lakshmi for the whole year. To welcome wealth and worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, they light up the house with lamps, Diyas, and colorful rangolis. The aroma of candles and fresh flowers of marigold cover the whole house.

While Diwali is all about prayers, tradition, food, and lights, people also prefer to play cards and drink alcohol on Diwali. People say this practice is years old and has been in their family since the time of their ancestors.

As there are some mythological reasons behind every practice of Diwali, this also has a history by which people make this custom valid. It is believed that Goddess Parvati played dice with her husband Lord Shiva on Diwali and, the Goddess commanded that whosoever gambled on Diwali night would prosper throughout the year. 

Since then the tradition of playing cards such as bluff and rummy with stakes on Deepawali has become a popular sight. Giving social sanction to vice, there is a saying that if someone doesn’t play cards on Diwali night then he/she will bear as a donkey in his/her next life.

This common saying of Diwali is much popular among the fans of card games.

Diwali night is considered very auspicious for money-related activities and folks prefer to try their luck by playing cards. They believe this can make the grace of goddess Lakshmi on their work and business as well. Also, they believe this can be a lucky charm for their home for the rest of the year. Devi Parvati played dice with her husband but with time this custom changed into playing cards and gambling as well.
