It is believed that Goddess Parvati played dice with her husband Lord Shiva on Diwali and, the Goddess commanded that whosoever gambled on Diwali night would prosper throughout the year. 

Since then the tradition of playing cards such as bluff and rummy with stakes on Deepawali has become a popular sight. Giving social sanction to vice, there is a saying that if someone doesn’t play cards on Diwali night then he/she will bear as a donkey in his/her next life.
