Papanasham Beach In Kerala's Varkala Listed Among Top 100 Beaches Worldwide

Kerala Tourism Minister PA Mohamed Riyas hailed the recognition as a significant achievement for Varkala Beach.

Papanasham Beach in Thiruvananthapuram, also known as Varkala Beach, has earned a spot among the world's top 100 beaches by Lonely Planet. It stands out as the sole location in southern Kerala where cliffs meet the Arabian Sea and recognized as a geological landmark by the Geological Survey of India (GSI). The beach reportedly draws tourists seeking relaxation and rejuvenation and is known for its sandy expanses and tranquil atmosphere.

The beach has been featured in Lonely Planet's "Best Beaches: 100 of the World’s Most Incredible Beaches" guide book.

Kerala Tourism Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas hailed the recognition as a significant achievement for Varkala Beach. He noted the global reach of Lonely Planet's travel book will enhance the beach's appeal to travelers. The government has plans to expedite development efforts to transform Varkala into a premier tourism destination with initiatives including safeguarding the Varkala Cliff, enhancing infrastructure, and minimizing environmental impact, he said.

Papanasham Beach, bordered by coconut palms and featuring endless blue waters, is renowned as a haven for travelers seeking relaxation and rejuvenation. Papanasham Beach holds religious significance as a sacred pilgrimage site. According to belief, immersing in the waters of the beach absolves one of sins ("papam") and hence it got its name.

Furthermore, the tradition of immersing ashes from cremation grounds into the sea at Papanasham Beach is deeply rooted in the belief that it purifies the departed souls, leading them towards moksha or eternal salvation.

Recent endeavors to elevate the beach's allure include the introduction of a floating bridge and adventure tourism activities. A floating bridge, spanning 100 meters in length and three meters in width, also reportedly offers a spacious viewing platform for visitors. Additionally, Kerala Tourism will host the International Surfing Festival at Varkala from March 29 to 31.
