Kerala Man Abandons Father In Rental House, Moves To Unknown Location; Human Rights Commission Steps In

Kerala Health and Social Justice Minister Veena George assured that Shanmughan would receive appropriate treatment and care.

The Residents of Eroor, a suburb of Kochi, were shocked on Saturday morning to discover that 70-year-old Shanmugham, who had been unwell for an extended period, had been abandoned by his son Ajith and the rest of the family as they vacated their rented home to relocate to an undisclosed place.

The landlord and neighbours, upon learning of Shanmugham's situation, promptly contacted the police and provided him with food, water, and immediate medical assistance. Despite the son and his family moving their belongings from the rented house, they left behind the elderly man and his medical equipment, according to locals.

Following extensive media coverage of the incident, the police intervened and transferred the bedridden man to the nearby taluk hospital for further care.

The State Human Rights Commission promptly intervened and initiated a case based on media reports. Commission Member V K Beena Kumari instructed the Tripunithura station house officer to conduct a thorough investigation and submit a report within 10 days. Kerala Health and Social Justice Minister Veena George assured that Shanmughan would receive appropriate treatment and care.

"He is now shifted to the Tripunithura taluk hospital. Further care would be ensured with the support of the Social Justice Department," she said, as per a report on PTI.

Tripunithura police said that they would file a case against the son who abandoned his father. The son, reportedly accompanied by his wife and children, was said to be en route to Velankanni.

The owner of the house said, “Ajith told the police that he would vacate the house but he needed some more time. It was only yesterday that someone informed me that they had vacated my house. But I was also told that his father had been left behind. When I reached my house I saw that the entire home had been cleared but his old and helpless father was lying on the bed.”

He said that he immediately informed the police about it.
