Kerala Catholic Priest Removed From Vicar Duties Hours After Joining BJP

Fr Kuriakose Mattam on Monday joined the BJP in the presence of BJP Idukki district president KS Aji.

A Catholic priest under the Idukki diocese of Syro-Malabar church, who joined BJP on Monday, was relieved of his duties as vicar. Within hours of joining the party, Idukki diocese initiated the action against him. The church temporarily relieved Fr Mattom of parish duties at the Mankuva St Thomas church near Adimali. The priest joined BJP at a time when the church has been attacking the saffron party over the violence that erupted in Manipur.

Fr Kuriakose Mattam on Monday joined the BJP in the presence of BJP Idukki district president KS Aji, reported PTI.

A statement by Idukki Diocese said, "Father Kuriakose Mattam of Mankuva church has been temporarily relieved of his duties as vicar."

A representative of the church disclosed that the disciplinary measure was enforced in accordance with Canon Law, which forbids a priest from affiliating or engaging with any political party. A church source said, the 74-year-old priest was to retire in a few months.

In a Facebook post, Aji shared the images of the priest and said Fr Mattam has joined the BJP after "observing the current situation" in the country.

Aji stated that the Christian priest's entry into the BJP was a response to criticism of the party regarding the Manipur issue.

In a video, the priest said that he could not find any reason not to join the BJP.

The priest said that he follows contemporary issues and does not find any reason not to join the BJP.

The priest said, "I have friendships with many BJP workers. Today I received a membership. I have read from the newspapers and have an understanding of the BJP in the country."
