Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar Become K'taka CM, Dy CM. Rahul's Big Promise After Oath Ceremony — Top Points

Congress has officially begun ruling Karnataka after it went through several ups and downs to choose its CM. With the government in place, take a look at what all happened so far.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Saturday visited Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru after taking the oath of office, ending the Karnataka saga. Apart from these two, eight other MLAs were sworn in as the cabinet ministers of the newly-elected Karnataka government. DK Shivakumar even bowed at the stairs of Vidhana Soudha as a mark of respect for the sanctity of the assembly. With the government almost in place, what remains is the distribution of portfolios among the ministers.

While the Congress-led Karnataka government has another journey to take for the next five years, we take a recap of the government formation ladder that the party climbed in a dramatic manner.

Top Points On Karnataka Government Formation

  • After being sworn in as Karnataka CM, Siddaramaiah said, "Five 'guarantees' will be passed in Cabinet meeting and order will be issued to implement them today itself." He added, "We will give administration people expect from us."

  • After the Karnataka cabinet oath-taking ceremony, Congress leader Raul Gandhi said, "The first Cabinet meeting of the new Karnataka government will be chaired in the next couple of hours where the five guarantees (promised by the Congress) will become law." He said, "We made 5 promises to you. I had said we don't make false promises. We do what we say. In 1-2 hours, the first cabinet meeting of the Karnataka govt will happen and in that meeting these 5 promises will become law."

  • According to ANI, Rahul Gandhi added, "We will give you a clean, non-corrupt government...After Congress's victory, many things were written as to how Congress won this election, different analyses were done but I want to say that Congress won because we stood with the poor, Dalits, and Adivasis, backwards. We had truth, poor people. BJP had money, police and everything but the people of Karnataka defeated all their powers."

  • Earlier, Siddaramaiah was sworn in as Karnataka's Chief Minister in a grand swearing-in ceremony at Bengaluru's  Kanteerava Stadium. DK Shivakumar took oath as the deputy CM of the southern state.

  • Apart from them, Satish Jarkiholi, Priyank Kharge, Ramalinga Reddy, BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan, Dr G Parameshwara, KH Muniyappa, KJ George and MB Patil took oath as cabinet ministers in the newly-elected Karnataka Government.

  • Meanwhile, Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge, party leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and former Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath attended the swearing-in ceremony.

  • Besides them, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, NCP president Sharad Pawar, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel, Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav also attended the swearing-in ceremony in Bengaluru.

  • Other important faces include Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin and actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan who attended the oath-taking ceremony.

  • The opposition displayed a show of strength from the stage hinting at a united front ahead of the next year's Lok Sabha polls in the country.

  • Before the ceremony, Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar welcomed Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra at the  Bengaluru airport.

  • Earlier in the day, supporters of Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah sang songs and distributed sweets outside his residence in Bengaluru, ahead of his swearing-in ceremony. Traditional musical instruments were also played outside his house as supporters gather to celebrate.

  • Banners with Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, former Congress presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, current party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and other leaders of the party were seen in Bengaluru earlier in the day.

  • On Friday, after days of deliberations and meetings, Congress declared Siddaramaiah as Karnataka CM and Shivakumar as the deputy CM.

  • Siddaramaiah was in the race for the top post along with the party’s state unit chief DK Shivakumar. The decision finally came days after the Congress defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party and won 135 seats, whereas the saffron party only managed to win 66 seats. JD(S) was restricted to 19 seats.
