Mumbai-Karnataka Region With 7 Districts To Be Renamed As Kittur Karnataka, Decides Cabinet

The Kittur Karnataka will consist of seven districts including Uttara Kannada, Belagavi, Dharwad, Vijayapura, Bagalkote, Gadag and Haveri.

Chennai: The Karnataka cabinet on Monday decided to name the Karnataka-Mumbai region as "Kittur Karnataka" during the monsoon session to be held in December. The Kittur Karnataka will consist of seven districts including Uttara Kannada, Belagavi, Dharwad, Vijayapura, Bagalkote, Gadag and Haveri. 

According to a report on PTI, Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister JC Maduswamy said that the region will be rechristened since they do not want to refer to the region as Bombay-Karnataka or Mumbai-Karnataka. 

The move of the government comes after several pro-Kannada organizations demanded the renaming of the region, which was erstwhile with Bombay before Independence. 

The authorities chose the name Kittu based on a historical taluk in Belagavi district which was ruled by Rani Chennamma who was known for fighting against the British even before Jhansi Rani.

This is not the first time Karnataka is remaining the regions. The previous BS Yediyurappa government renamed the Hyderabad-Karnataka region which was previously with the Nizams as Kalyana-Karnataka

Next month, a legislature renaming the region will be brought during the winter session of the legislative assembly which will be held at Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi after 3 years. Talking about the session, the Law Minister said, the date for the winter session will soon be finalized. For now, the cabinet has tentatively decided to organize the session from December 13 to 24.

The Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai led cabinet has also approved the bifurcation of Dharwad Milk Union to form Haveri. In the same way, Kolar-Chikkaballapur District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Ltd will be divided with Chikkaballapur getting a milk union of its own.
