Karnataka: DK Shivakumar Reveals Govt Plan To Take Over Bengaluru's Borewells Amid Severe Water Crisis

Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar announced that the state government would take control of private water tankers in Bengaluru alongside taking over management of all the city's borewells.

In a significant move to address the severe drinking water crisis in Bengaluru, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, cabinet ministers and the official secretaries of respective departments met in Bengaluru on Tuesday. Following the discussions, Deputy CM Shivakumar unveiled a comprehensive plan aimed at resolving the city's water scarcity issues. The Deputy Chief Minister announced that the state government would take control of private water tankers in Bengaluru alongside taking over management of all the city's borewells.

After the meet, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said, "As far as Bengaluru’s drinking water problem is concerned, we have come out with the solution. I have come up with the plan of action, we are taking over all the borewells of Bengaluru city."

On Monday, the Deputy CM announced that they have identified that 50% of the borewells have run dry. He said, "There is a big problem. There are about 14,700 borewells in Bengaluru and 6,997 have dried up whereas around 7,784 are working. Water doesn’t belong to any individual, it’s for everyone. We are creating a war room. All the officials will try and come up with a solution. We will also fix a common price for water tankers. Rs 556 crores have been allocated for water supply."

He also issued a warning to water tanker owners/operators, stating that the government would confiscate their tankers if they fail to register with the authorities before the March 7 deadline.
