'We Don't Do Hate Politics': Karnataka Deputy CM Over Arrest Of Babri Masjid Demolition Agitator

Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar emphasized that the law was only taking action against those who disturbed the peace.

Days after a controversy emerged over Karnataka police arresting a 50-year-old man allegedly involved in the riots following the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar stated that they do not engage in hate politics. He emphasized that the law was only taking action against those who disturbed the peace.

On the arrest of a person in Karnataka's Hubballi for alleged involvement in the riots after the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said, "Home Minister has already clarified that we have not arrested innocents, we don't do hate politics. Law is taking action against those who disturb the peace...We never broke the law in the way BJP did and booked cases on Congress workers and MLAs..."

After the arrest, Karnataka BJP chief BY Vijayendra alleged that with the action the state govt was proving again and again that it was an anti-Hindu government.  BJP leaders also protested against the state government after the arrest of a person in Karnataka's Hubballi for alleged involvement in the riots after the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992.

However, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah also defended the action of the state police. He said, "What should be done to the wrongdoers? Should we just leave them? We have told the police to dispose of the old cases. The police have taken action accordingly. We have not done any hate politics. No innocents have been arrested. We will take things forward according to the court's direction."

Last week, Karnataka police arrested Poojary in connection with the riots following Babri Masjid demolition in 1992. Poojary was reportedly 20 years old at the time of the riots.

On December 6, 1992, right-wing Hindu activists demolished the Babri Masjid, a 16th-century mosque located in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.
