Karnataka: PM Modi Condoles Death Of Former Speaker DB Chandre Gowda

DB Chandre Gowda, who made the way for former PM Indira Gandhi's comeback, served in over 6 parties including Praja Socialist Party, Karnataka Kranti Ranga, Janata Party, Janata Dal, Congress and BJP.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the passing away of veteran Karnataka politician and former minister DB Chandre Gowda on Tuesday. The PM remembered the leader as a stalwart of public service. DB Chandre Gowda, who made the way for former PM Indira Gandhi's comeback after the Emergency, served in over six parties including Praja Socialist Party, Karnataka Kranti Ranga, Janata Party, Janata Dal, Congress and BJP.

DB Chandre Gowda passed away at 87 due to age-related ailments at his residence in Daradahalli in Mudigere taluk of Chikkamagaluru district on Tuesday. The public can pay their respects at Adyantaya Rangamandira in Mudigere from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on November 8 before the final rites at his estate.

Taking to X, PM Modi said, "Anguished by the passing away of Shri DB Chandregowda Ji. A stalwart of public service, his extensive experience as MP, MLA, and Minister in Karnataka has left an indelible mark. His deep understanding of our Constitution and commitment to community service were noteworthy. My heartfelt condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti."

Born on August 26, 1936, Gowda became a lawyer before completing entering politics.

Gowda has represented all four Houses including legislative assembly, council, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. 

He rose to prominence after resigning as a Lok Sabha member in 1978 to allow former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to run for the Chikkamagaluru Constituency, and he worked tirelessly to ensure her victory. As the entire country watched, Gandhi won the Chikkamagaluru byelection, giving the Congress a much-needed boost after the Emergency.
