SC reserves order on Malayalam novel 'Meesha'

New Delhi (India), Aug 2 [ANI]: The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its order on the petition seeking a ban on Malayalam novel 'Meesha'.

The petitioner N. Radhakrishnan said that the book, written by S. Hareesh, contained some content which will hurt the religious sentiments.

A three-judge bench of the court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra which also comprised Justices A.M Khanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud also instructed that objectionable contents or paragraphs must also be removed from the novel.

The CJI also maintained the banning books should not be a culture unless it violates the section 292 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The apex court also asked another Malayalam weekly, 'Mathrubhumi" to produce before the court the translation of three objectionable paragraphs of 'Meesha' in five days. (ANI)
