Maratha stir: Congress delegation seeks Governor's intervention

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], Jul 30 (ANI): A Congress delegation on Monday met Maharashtra Governor Vidyasagar Rao and sought his intervention to pacify the ongoing Maratha Reservation agitation.

The delegation also asked the state government to expedite its efforts for providing 16 percent reservation to Maratha community.

Meanwhile, Section 144 was imposed in Pune's Chakan area following violent protests in the vicinity has been revoked.

Pune District Collector said that a total of 16 vehicles were set ablaze and 25 vehicles were vandalised by mob during violent protests.

Earlier in the day, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray said that party MLAs would be meeting Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today to discuss the reservation issue.

Maratha outfit, the Maratha Kranti Morcha has been protesting across the state demanding reservation in government jobs and education.

Besides reservation the outfit has also been demanding loan waiver, justice in Kopardi rape and unemployment for their community.

On July 27, Fadnavis had invited party leaders of both the Houses for a meeting in Vidhan Sabha to discuss the ongoing Maratha stir. He had earlier chaired a meeting with BJP ministers and party legislators from the Maratha community to discuss the issue.

A day before, a Maratha Kranti Morcha riot victim, who was injured in a clash between protestors and police in Navi Mumbai, succumbed to his injuries. So far, two protestors have taken their lives demanding reservations for Marathas while one, who also attempted suicide, is undergoing treatment at a hospital. (ANI)
