Chennai advocates refuse to defend sexual assault accused
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], July 17 (ANI): Advocates at the Chennai High Court on Tuesday have announced that they would not defend the accused in the case of sexual assault and rape of a minor.
The president of the Chennai High Court Advocate Association, G. Mohana Krishnan, announced that they would not appear in favour of the accused.
"We have decided not to appear for the accused. We are sending the decision to the association. We are also sending our decision to advocate associations all over Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry and request not to appear for the accused," said Krishnan.
He further said that the accused, who were produced in the Mahila Court earlier in the day, were beaten up by the public and not the lawyers.
"The accused were produced in Mahila Court today, and a large number of advocates and the local public gathered around them and raised slogans against the accused. The general public attacked the accused, not the lawyers," he added.
Earlier in the day, a video went viral on Twitter, where 18 accused of a sexual harassment case were presented at Mahila Court in Chennai.
The accused sexually harassed an 11-year-old girl for over a period of 7 months.
