PM Modi's Address | HIGHLIGHTS: PM Terms Revocation Of Article 370 in Jammu And Kashmir ‘Historic’

Background

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation at 8 pm  today where he is likely to explain about government's decision to revoke the special status  given to Jammu and Kashmir and also on splitting the state into two Union Territories - Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Apart from the major political developments on Kashmir and Ladakh, Prime Minister's may also address the nation ahead of the 73rd  Indepence Day of the country.

This will be his first such address after coming back to power

"Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi will be addressing the nation at 8 PM today," it said in a tweet. PM Modi's address comes amid the divided opinion of the people across the country on the much controversial move tabled by Home Minister Amit Shah and passed by both the Houses earlier this week.

The last time PM Modi had addressed the nation was on March 27 during the Lok Sabha elections when he announced that India had demonstrated anti-satellite missile (A-Sat) capability by shooting down a live satellite.

While several Opposition parties including Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), YSR Congress Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Telugu Desam Party (TDP), AIADMK, Shiv Sena and others backed government's decision to abrogate Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, Congress and other regional parties such as People's Democratic Party (PDP), National Conference, Janata Dal United, DMK, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) opposed the same.

Congress has termed the withdrawal of Jammu and Kashmir's special status and its bifurcation into two Union territories an exercise that did not take into account the repercussions of the decision. However, several senior leaders expressed dissent over Congress' opposition and broke party line to back the government on abrogation of Article 370.

While Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in Lok Sabha strictly opposed the bill and questioned government over its intention behind revoking the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir, former MP from Madhya Pradesha and Rahul Gandhi's close aide Jyotiraditya Scindia supported the move. "I support the move on #JammuAndKashmir & #Ladakh and its full integration into union of India...the move is in country's interest" he tweeted.

Social media too looked divided over government undoing of a decision which was termed as an old 'Nehruvian blunder', not all think the move is for the benefit of the people of J&K. Fulfilling an electoral promise of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in less than 90 days after the Modi 2.0 government took power, Shah had announced the decision in the Rajya Sabha, which approved both the resolution and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill.
