Israel-Hamas, Russia-Ukraine Situation Discussed In Detail At G20 Virtual Summit: EAM Jaishankar

Addressing a press conference after the virtual G20 Summit, EAM Jaishankar said the member nations mainly discussed the geopolitical issues pertaining to Middle East and West Asia.

New Delhi: Terming the discussions at G20 virtual summit as “fruitful” and “very productive”, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said all the members congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on successful steering of India’s G20 presidency and vowed to carry forward the outcome of the discussions held over the last one year.

Addressing a press conference after the virtual G20 Summit, EAM Jaishankar noted that the situation in West Asia has "deteriorated dramatically". He said the member nations mainly discussed the geopolitical issues pertaining to Middle East and West Asia. He added the situation in Gaza came up in detail and also the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

“In terms of what was discussed, I would say mostly there was progress on the agenda of the New Delhi Summit. Of course, the two geopolitical issues which came up in the meeting were Middle East and West Asia. Gaza situation came up in greater detail. Also, the Ukraine conflict, and its consequences,” EAM Jaishankar said.

“Prime Minister Modi assured President Lula of Brazil of India's fullest support. As Brazil takes over the presidency, we will be part of the G20 and together we will continue to take forward the outcomes achieved during our presidency,” he added.

On the two-state solution to Israel-Palestine conflict, he said, "Many countries I would say spoke about it explicitly. But I would say, not everybody did. Again I cannot say that there was a consensus on the two-state solution."

Speaking on the absence of Chinese President Xi Jinping at the virtual meet, EAM Jaishankar said it is the country’s decision on who would represent it. “Prime Minister Li Qiang had represented them at the G20 New Delhi Summit, so they chose to continue with that.”

“Today's G20 virtual summit was attended by all 21 members, including the AU, the nine guest countries and eleven international organisations. The discussions were fruitful. All leaders congratulated the Prime Minister on the successful steering of India's G 20 presidency," EAM Jaishankar said.
