G20: Special Invitees And International Organisations Attending The Summit In Delhi

G20 Summit: India is set to host the maiden G20 Summit this week in the national capital Delhi. Take a look at who all will be attending the summit, and who are the special invitees for the event.

G20 Summit India: The year-long Indian presidency of the G20 will culminate this week with the mega summit in the national capital witnessing heads of states, governments and several international organisations in one place. The meet will take place on September 9-10 when India will have an opportunity to lead the delegates through a deliberation so as to release a joint declaration at the end. The Government of India has planned several programmes for the delegates, including for their spouses.

US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron are among the leaders who have confirmed their presence at the summit while Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his inability to attend the meet. He said that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will attend the 18th G20 Summit in Delhi.

Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping is unlikely to attend the event. The Chinese foreign ministry on Monday confirmed that Premier Li Qiang will represent the country at the summit.

Special Invitees At G20 Summit

The country that hosts the G20 summit invites several other countries and institutions that are not members of the group to attend the meet. India India has invited Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Egypt President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte, Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Spanish President Pedro Sanchez, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed and Oman Deputy Prime Minister Sayyid Asad Bin Tariq Al Said.

International Organisations Attending The G20 Summit

Apart from leaders of the states, India has also sent invitation to World Bank president Ajay Banga, International Solar Alliance director general Ajay Mathur, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure director general Amit Prothi, United Nations secretary general Antonio Guterres, International Labour Organisation director general Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, chair of Financial Stability Board Klaas Knot, International Monetary Fund managing director Kritalina Georgieva, Asian Development Bank president Masatsugu Asakawa, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development secretary general Mathias Cormann, World Trade Organisation director general Ngozi Okonjo Iweala and World Health Organisation director-general Tedros Adhanom Gherbreyesus for the summit.

Venue Of G20 Summit

The G20 meetings and deliberations will take place at the newly constructed International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC), hat PM Narendra Modi inaugurated in July this year. The summit will be held at the revamped India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) complex, erstwhile Pragati Maidan, which has been built at a cost of Rs 2,700 crores and constructed within an area of 123 acres. This ITPO complex houses the convention centre that will host all the meetings during the G20 summit.

G20 Countries

India and the other 19 G20 members represent 65 per cent of the world population, 75 per cent of global trade, and account for around 85 per cent of the world GDP.  The other members of the G20 are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the UK and the US, and the European Union.
