Mumbai Reports 20,181 COVID Cases, Highest Single-Day Rise. Delhi Logs 15,097 Infections
The worrying surge in fresh COVID-19 cases over the past several days is being recorded amid a significant jump in cases of the new Omicron variant of the virus.
New Delhi: Both Delhi and Mumbai on Thursday continued to witness the worrying upward trend in fresh Coronavirus infections as the national capital reported 15,097 new Coronavirus cases while Mumbai reported 20,181 fresh infections.
In a fresh all-time one-day high, Mumbai today reported 20,181 new cases of COVID-19 taking the overall tally to 8,53,809. With four fatalities, the death toll was pushed to 16,388. Meanwhile, the active caseload stood at 79,260.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation informed that the positivity rate in Mumbai reached 29.90 per cent today. 20,181 samples tested positive out of the total 67,000 samples tested, it stated, as reported by news agency ANI.
In terms of Omicron, among the 79 new cases recorded of the COVID variant in Maharashtra, 57 are reported from Mumbai, the state health department's statement informed. With this, the total number of Omicron cases in the financial capital has increased to 565 which also includes "26 out of state patients".
Delhi's Fresh Spike Of 15,097 Cases Is Its Highest Since May 8, 2021
The national capital on Thursday reported 15,097 new Coronavirus cases, along with six deaths and 6,900 recoveries in the last 24 hours.
Delhi's fresh spike of 15,097 cases is its highest since May 8, 2021. Meanwhile, active cases rise in the city have risen to 31,498. The Positivity rate has reached 15.34 per cent.
The number of new cases recorded on Thursday is 41 per cent more than the figure the day before, news agency PTI reported.
According to official data, 10,665 and 5,481 cases were recorded on Wednesday and Tuesday with a positivity rate of 11.88 per cent and 8.37 per cent respectively.
As previously mentioned, this rise is the highest since May 8, 2021, when 17,364 cases were reported with a positivity rate of 23.34 per cent. Notably, as many as 332 deaths were also recorded on that day.

The death toll due to the Coronavirus infection in Delhi has now risen to 25,127.
The number of cumulative cases on Thursday stands at 14,89,463. Over 14.32 lakh patients have recovered from the infection.
Meanwhile, amid rising cases, Delhi government has reopened COVID-care centres in the national capital, ANI reported.
