Covid-19 Returns? US, China & Others Witness Jump In Daily Caseload — All You Need To Know

Though the third wave of Coronavirus has started to subside in India without causing much harm, countries such as US, China, South Korea and others continue to report a very high number of cases.

New Delhi: Months after a decline in daily Covid-19 cases worldwide in January, several countries have once again started witnessing a surge in daily infections with  World Health Organisation (WHO) stating that there were more than 11 million new Coronavirus infections reported last week globally - about an 8% rise - and 43,000 new deaths.

Though the third wave of Coronavirus has started to subside in India without causing much harm, countries such as the United States, China, South Korea and others continue to report a very high number of cases.

According to WHO, the biggest increase in cases was seen in the Western Pacific and Africa, where infections rose by 29 per cent and 12 per cent,  respectively.

Here's a look at countries that are again witnessing a surge in Covid-19 cases:

United States

Coronavirus cases are once again rising in several parts of the US. According to White House, Omicron BA.2 sub-variant had been circulating in the US for some time, with roughly 35,000 cases as of Tuesday.

As per the data shared by US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), BA.2 sub-variant of Omicron makes up around 23.1 per cent of the coronavirus variants circulating in the US as of March 12. The subvariant goes up to 39% of the total cases reported in cities such as New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

China

China banned most people from leaving a coronavirus-hit northeastern province and mobilized military reservists on Monday, as the fast-spreading stealth Omicron variant fuels the country's biggest outbreak since the start of the pandemic two years ago.

Nearly 30 million people were under lockdown across China on Tuesday. At least 13 cities nationwide, including Shenzhen and Changchun, were fully locked down on Tuesday, and several other cities had partial lockdowns.

The daily caseload was sharply up from 362,329 in the previous day, topping 400,000 for the first time, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

According to French health authorities, the country reported as many as 18,853 new COVID-19 infections on Monday, a figure showing a week-on-week increase for the tenth consecutive time on the day France lifted most of the restrictions.

The seven-day moving average of new cases, which evens out reporting irregularities, reached 65,882, the highest since Feb. 24, news agency Reuters reported.
