Mumbai's Covid-19 Vaccination Drive Gets Hit By Lack Of Doses, Private Centres To Remain Shut Till Monday

The Coronavirus vaccination drive in Mumbai's private hospitals has come to a halt over the lack of doses, it will resume once more vaccine doses are made available.

Mumbai: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has informed that private vaccination centres in Mumbai will remain closed till Monday "due to insufficient supply of Covid-19 vaccine". Meanwhile, government and municipal hospitals will continue to vaccinate people as scheduled.

"Due to insufficient supply of Covid-19 vaccine, vaccination will not be available at the immunisation centres of private hospitals on April 10, 11 and 12, 2021," BMC's statement read.

As for private hospitals, the vaccination drive will resume once more vaccine doses are made available.

"On April 10, vaccination will take place in government and civic centres between noon and 6 am, and it will be between 9 am and 5 pm on April 11. Citizens eligible for vaccination can travel to centres during curfew on medical grounds," the BMC informed.

As per BMC data, there are 49 vaccination centres in government and BMC run hospitals while 71 have been set up in private hospitals. About 50,000 people are being vaccinated daily in these centres.

Mangala Gomate, executive health officer, BMC told news agency PTI that the capital city was expected to reach 1.8 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccines.

On Friday, about 90 vaccination centres, including 71 in private facilities, had to be shut due to a shortage of vaccine doses. Because of this, only 25,474 vaccine doses, including 2,854 second doses, could be administered at various centres - taking the number of doses given so far in Mumbai to 16,14,278, including 1,82,308 second doses.

According to officials, people protested at several centres when they were asked to go back due to the lack of vaccine doses.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra on Friday reported 58,993 coronavirus cases and 301 deaths in 24 hours. Pune, with 10,084 Covid cases, was the worst-affected district, followed by Mumbai with 9,200 single-day infections.
