Fact Check: Saw That Viral Video Of ‘Daughter-Dad Marrying Each Other’? It’s A Skit

In the viral clip, a young woman can be seen with an older man, being confronted by a cameraperson. The woman says she has married her father.

The Verdict: False

The clip is scripted, with a disclaimer on the original video stating it is for “entertainment purposes”.

What is the claim?

A video has been shared on social media claiming to show a Hindu woman in India who married her father. In the viral clip, a young woman can be seen with an older man, being confronted by a cameraperson. The woman says she has married her father and that it doesn’t matter if people support them or not.

Several social media users, including an Indian politician, shared the video online and wrote, “A daughter married her father, and the father married his daughter. The wedding was conducted in a temple according to Hindu rituals and traditions. After the ceremony, they spoke to the media, stating that no one should have any problem now, as both parties are in agreement and willing.” Archived versions of such posts, sharing the video as a real incident in India, can be found here, here and here.

Indian media outlets Zee News and Deccan Herald published reports about the viral video without verifying the authenticity of the video.

However, the claim is false. The video is scripted and was falsely circulated to claim that an Indian Hindu woman married her father. The people in the clip are playing roles and it does not show a genuine incident in India.

How did we find the truth?

We noticed that at the 0:33-minute mark of the two-minute-long viral video, a disclaimer is displayed. However, it is not clearly visible due to a text overlay.

We then found an extended version of the viral clip published on a YouTube channel named Royal Tiger on November 2 (archived here). This seven-minute-long video shows the woman and the man being confronted by a few people in the background. Initially, the woman claims he is her father but later clarifies that he is her father-in-law and that they got married because her husband stays elsewhere. The viral clip has been taken from between 0:14-minute to 2:12-minute time frame of the original video.

The disclaimer can be seen at the 0:47-minute mark and it read, “This video is purely made for entertainment purposes only. This video has no intention to disrespect or defame based on race, color, ancestry, national origin, ethnic group identification, age, religion, marital or parental status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or expression.”

We reviewed the videos published on the YouTube channel and found that it primarily shares scripted content. The man and the woman featured in the viral clip can also be seen acting in several other scripted videos. Such scripted videos can be seen here and here.

The YouTube channel is linked with an Instagram handle (archived here) named Ankita; the account’s bio reads that she is video creator and a “prankstar” from Delhi.

The verdict

The viral video is being shared with the false claim that it shows a Hindu woman in India marrying her father. The clip is scripted, with actors performing the roles. It does not show a genuine incident.
