Romiit Raj On Past Relationship With Shilpa Shinde: 'She Was The First To Call Off The Marriage'

Television actor Romiit Raj has opened up about his past relationship and broken engagement with actress Shilpa Shinde, years after their highly publicised split.

Television actor Romiit Raj has opened up about his past relationship and broken engagement with actress Shilpa Shinde, years after their highly publicised split. The two had met on the sets of the popular TV show 'Maayka' and decided to get married after dating for six months. However, they eventually realised that marriage was not the right step for them.

Romiit Raj on dating Shilpa Shinde

In a recent conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Romiit revisited that chapter of his life, sharing candid details about their whirlwind romance and why they called it quits. “Yes I dated Shilpa but that was 16 years ago. We met on the sets of Maayka. I had been in Mumbai for 10 years by that time and I had not been seeing anyone for that time and Shilpa is a very nice person, she was very helpful and kind to the technicians around and was very nice to me. We dated each other for six months while working together and I just felt that we should get married and she felt the same way,” he said.

On calling off the wedding

Although the couple initially felt confident in their decision to get engaged, things began to shift over time. Romiit admitted that despite mutual respect and admiration, they discovered key differences that led to the decision to separate. “I told my parents she is the one but after six months we realised that we aren’t meant to be together and that it will not work out if we get married. And I think it was good decision on her and my end. We are strong headed personalities and we have a very strong point of view. She was the first person to call off the marriage,” he explained.

He also clarified that the two never remained in touch after their breakup. “We have never been friends after breaking up, we never met also.”

Romiit on defending Shilpa during her Bigg Boss journey

Years later, Romiit came to Shilpa’s defense when she was being criticised during her time on Bigg Boss 11. He recalled the harsh messages he received about her, and why he felt the need to speak up. “When Shilpa was in the Bigg Boss house people started writing to me like, ‘You are very lucky that you didn’t marry her.’ They started saying rubbishing things about her and I don’t know why but I don’t like anybody saying wrongs things about her. You can’t judge anyone by watching them for an hour on a show. She is a kind and intelligent person and after I supported her, she won the show three months later.”

Dismissing long-standing speculation that their breakup turned ugly, Romiit called their separation a mature and well-thought-out decision. He also shut down claims that his family had been demanding or had played any role in the split. “My parents never interfere and they have never been demanding, he stated.

Romiit has since moved on and is now married to Tina Kakkar. The couple has a daughter and continues to keep their life away from the limelight.
