‘Tandav’ Controversy: Director Ali Abbas Zafar Issues ‘Unconditional’ Apology For Hurting ‘Sentiments’

Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, ‘Tandav’ has received a lot of backlash from the viewers. Amidst all these, director Ali released an official statement on behalf of the cast and crew of the political web series. Read the statement here.

New Delhi: Saif Ali Khan-Dimple Kapadia starrer ‘Tandav’ is a political drama which released on January 15, 2021, on Amazon Prime Video. However, soon after its release, it landed into a pool of controversies as viewers alleged that it hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindus. Netizens also claimed that Saif’s political drama have insulted Lord Rama and Lord Shiva in the very first episode.

Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, ‘Tandav’ has received a lot of backlash from the viewers. Amidst all these, director Ali released an official statement on behalf of the cast and crew of the political web series. The statement read, “We have been closely monitoring viewer reactions to the web series Tandav and today during a discussion, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting have informed us regarding a large number of grievances and petitions received on various facets of the web series with serious concerns and apprehensions regarding its content hurting the sentiments of the people.”

He added, “The web series Tandav is a work of fiction and any resemblance to acts and persons and events is purely coincidental. The cast and crew did not have any intention to offend the sentiments of any individual, caste, community, race, religion or religious beliefs or insult or outrage any institution, political party or person, living or dead. The cast and crew of Tandav take cognizance of the concerns expressed by the people and unconditionally apologize if it has unintentionally hurt anybody’s sentiments.”

Sharing the statement from his official Twitter account, Ali wrote, “Our sincere apologies.”

Meanwhile, a criminal complaint has been filed in a court in Delhi against the web series. The petition alleges that ‘Tandav’ incites communal disharmony and hurts Hindu sentiments.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has also sought an explanation from the online streaming platform Amazon Prime Video. It issued a summon to the same in response to the complaints filed against the ‘Tandav’ web series for hurting religious sentiments and denigrating Hindu gods and goddesses.
