Special Ops Season 2 Review: A Fast-Paced Thriller That Hits All The Right Notes

Special Ops Season 2 review: With compelling performances, fast-paced storytelling, and a high-concept plot that feels timely, it’s a worthy addition to the franchise. Rating: (3.5/5)

Special Ops Season 2 review: The 'Special Ops' franchise has carved out a loyal fanbase since its debut, and the arrival of Season 2 (technically the third installment after Season 1 and 1.5) was met with eager anticipation. Fortunately, the new season on Jio Hotstar lives up to the hype—it’s taut, engaging, and firmly rooted in the thrilling world of cybercrime.

Special Ops Season 2 plot

Set in the age of Artificial Intelligence, the story kicks off with the kidnapping of India’s top scientist, Dr. Piyush Bhargav. Simultaneously, an intelligence officer is murdered. The stakes couldn’t be higher—Dr. Bhargav holds vital national secrets, and his disappearance could endanger the country’s entire financial infrastructure. Enter Himmat Singh (Kay Kay Menon), tasked with bringing him back before irreversible damage is done.

The plot also weaves in a complex bank fraud and a chilling antagonist with a bizarre obsession—he enjoys holding people captive. How it all connects is what keeps the audience hooked.

How is Special Ops Season 2?

The pace is relentless. Twists land one after another, new characters are introduced organically, and the story travels across countries—offering stunning visuals and top-notch production value. With seven episodes, each running close to an hour, there’s never a dull moment. It’s a binge-worthy ride that doesn’t feel stretched.

The action is slick, the plot is tightly constructed, and the new characters add freshness. Special Ops has become a brand in itself—fans will watch this season no matter what, and they’re unlikely to be disappointed.

Performances

Kay Kay Menon remains the heartbeat of the series. Understated yet powerful, he brings gravitas with just a look or a line. His ability to portray personal conflict while staying mission-focused is masterful. If there are flaws in the script, Menon’s performance more than makes up for them.

Karan Tacker delivers an impressive performance—charismatic and commanding, he makes you wonder why he didn’t get such roles earlier. Tahir Raj Bhasin plays an unconventional villain who terrifies without bloodshed, and he does it well. Prakash Raj is excellent as a man helplessly watching the system collapse around him. Gautami Kapoor, Muzammil Ibrahim, Parmeet Sethi, Arif Zakaria, and Shikha Talsania all leave a mark, while Sayami Kher feels slightly underused compared to her potential.

Direction and writing

Created by Neeraj Pandey and directed by Shivam Nair, the series is a tightrope walk between realism and drama. The writing, while solid, could’ve been sharper. But the direction is crisp, and the pacing breathless. What stands out is the creators’ ability to deliver edge-of-the-seat storytelling without relying on excessive bloodshed or noise.

Final verdict

Special Ops Season 2 is a well-crafted thriller that keeps you invested from start to finish. With compelling performances, fast-paced storytelling, and a high-concept plot that feels timely, it’s a worthy addition to the franchise.
