Jaideep Ahlawat Calls Mumbai Paatal Lok: ‘Wo Sheher Aapko Jhanjhod Ke Rakhta Hai’

Jaideep Ahlawat spoke about his preparation for the role, how his Haryanvi roots helped bring Hathi Ram to life, and his personal take on what represents Paatal Lok for him.

Jaideep Ahlawat’s portrayal of Hathi Ram Chaudhary in 'Paatal Lok' has gone down in books as one of the most well-crafted characters in recent Indian shows. Much like the first season, the second installment received widespread acclaim, with Ahlawat earning praise from all quarters for his nuanced performance, effortlessly balancing the character’s vulnerability and strength. In a recent conversation with ABP Ent Live, Ahlawat spoke about his preparation for the role, how his Haryanvi roots helped bring Hathi Ram to life, and his personal take on what represents Paatal Lok for him.

Jaideep Ahlawat calls Mumbau 'Paatal Lok'

Ahlawat, who calls himself a "Paatal Lok ka permanent niwasi" in the series, was asked how he would categorise the places significant to his life—his birthplace Kharkara in Haryana, the city where he studied, Rohtak, and Mumbai, where he has built his career - as Swarglok (heaven), Dhartilok (earth), and Paatal Lok (hell). He responded, “Apna ghar aapko humesha swarglok lagega, jahaan aap paida huey badey huey, dhartilok is Rohtak, Not actual Paatal Lok but if you have lived in Mumbai, the chaos of the city. It’s so much of chaos not just physically but also mentally. Everybody is running around to get something, to be something to show something. To wo sheher aapko jhanjhod ke rakhta hai so yes, Mumbai (Your home will always feel like heaven to you—it’s where you were born and raised. The earthly realm is Rohtak, while not literal Paatal Lok, but if you’ve lived in Mumbai, you’d understand the chaos of the city. It’s not just physically overwhelming but also mentally exhausting. Everyone is constantly running—chasing something, trying to become someone, or striving to prove something. That city shakes you to your core. So yes, Mumbai).”

Jaideep Ahalwat on gaining 20kgs for Paatal Lok Season 2

Ahlawat also shared the physical demands required for 'Paatal Lok Season 2', revealing that he gained nearly 20 kilograms for the role. Interestingly, before filming the second season, he had undergone a drastic weight loss of 28 kilograms for his film 'Maharaj'. Discussing the physical transformations actors undergo for roles, he stated, “Badane mein zaada tension nahi hai, khao pio aur so, kam karne mein jaan nikalti hai kyuki aapka khana, timing, portion. Aap timer lagake khate ho, consistency is very important, It is Paatal Lok (There’s not much stress in gaining weight—just eat, drink, and sleep. But losing weight is exhausting because you have to monitor your food, timing, and portions. You eat with a timer, and consistency is crucial).”
