After years of uncertainty, 'Dostana 2' is finally back on track — this time with a revamped cast. The film, which once had Kartik Aaryan, Janhvi Kapoor, and newcomer Lakshya in the lead roles, had been shelved indefinitely despite multiple announcements, photoshoots, and considerable buzz. While the exact reason for the shelving was never officially revealed, the project had seemingly faded into the background — until now.
Vikrant Massey in Dostana 2?
Producer Karan Johar appears to have breathed new life into the sequel. According to recent reports, the film is once again in motion under Dharma Productions, with some notable casting changes. Lakshya, who was always expected to make his debut with this film, is still on board. However, Kartik Aaryan’s role has now reportedly been handed over to '12th Fail' star Vikrant Massey. Meanwhile, Janhvi Kapoor will no longer be a part of the project. Her character will be portrayed by a newcomer, whose casting is yet to be finalised.
A report by Pinkvilla quoted a source as saying, “Dostana 2 has been in development at Dharma for a while, and the makers have cracked a perfect script that can carry the franchise forward in a progressive manner. Dostana 2 will feature Vikrant Massey with Lakshya, and will mark the launch pad of a debutant as the female lead. The makers are aiming to take the film on floors in January 2026, and release in the end of next year.”
The film is being envisioned as a big-screen entertainer, promising a mix of romance, comedy, music, and drama — true to the style of its 2008 predecessor. “Dostana 2 is being conceptualised as a theatrical film, with music, comedy, romance, and drama. Talks are on with filmmakers, and a director will be locked in a fortnight,” the source added.
Vikrant Massey announced a break from films
Interestingly, this update comes just months after Vikrant Massey surprised fans by announcing a temporary break from acting to focus on his personal life. In December 2024, the actor had posted on social media about stepping back to spend time with his family. Nevertheless, he is currently in the final stages of shooting for the Sri Sri Ravi Shankar biopic, and reports suggest he may also be part of 'Don 3' in the near future.
