New Delhi: Vicky Kaushal, who portrayed the role of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw in the biopic 'Sam Bahadur', pays homage to the Indian war hero on his 110th birth anniversary. Fimmaker Meghna Gulzar chronicles the famed Field Marshal's whole life in the film.

Vicky took to Instagram Stories on Wednesday to post a monochrome photo of Sam Manekshaw smiling for the camera. “Remembering the legend on his 110th birth anniversary. Sam Bahadur,” he wrote in the caption.

Sam Manekshaw was born in Amritsar, Punjab, into a Parsi family on April 3, 1914. His parents were Hilla née Mehta and Hormizd Manekshaw, a doctor by profession. His father had been a captain in the Indian Medical Service of the British Indian Army.

During his time in the Indian Armed Forces, Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw possessed an exceptionally high rank. He was appointed India's first field marshal in 1973. During the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, he acted as the head of the Indian Army staff. He received the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award, and the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award, in recognition of his numerous contributions to the country's freedom movement.

The film 'Sam Bahadur', which was released in December of last year, tells the story of the legendary soldier and how his strategic thinking strengthened the army. The movie, which also starred Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Sanya Malhotra, Neeraj Kabi, Edward Sonnenblick, and Fatima Sana Shaikh, clashed with the Ranbir Kapoor movie 'Animal' at the box office, with the latter becoming as one of the year's biggest hits.
