'Came So Close To Death...': Pope Francis’ Doctor Considered Ending His Treatment To Allow Him Peaceful Death

Pope Francis was critically ill with pneumonia and at risk of organ damage. Despite the risk, doctors continued treatment, guided by Francis's nurse and personal assistant.

During his 38-day hospital stay for pneumonia, Pope Francis came so near to death that his physicians thought about stopping his treatment so he could pass away peacefully, according to the head of the pope's medical staff.

The most crucial event occurred on February 28, when the pope experienced a breathing crisis and ingested his own vomit, according to Professor Sergio Alfieri, who spoke to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

“We had to choose whether to stop and let him go or force it and try with all the drugs and therapies possible, running the very high risk of damaging other organs. And in the end, we took this path,” Alfieri said.

Francis' nurse decided to continue treatment, according to Alfieri, who oversaw the staff at the Gemelli hospital in Rome. "The Holy Father makes the final decision. He gave Massimiliano Strappetti, his personal health care assistant, complete control over all health care decisions because he is fully aware of the Pontiff's preferences."

He reportedly told Alfieri, “Try everything, we won’t give up. That’s what we all thought too. And no one gave up.”

Following his treatment for double pneumonia, Francis was released on Sunday. Doctors advised him to stay away from crowds for two months while he recovered.  When the pope spoke to the audience outside the Gemelli hospital prior to his release, he looked pale and feeble.

Francis Returned To His Residence

According to the Vatican, Francis has returned to his home at Casa Santa Marta, where he will participate in private prayer and receive physical therapy connected to his mobility and respiratory system, particularly for voice recovery.

The pope was also instructed by doctors to have medical support around-the-clock, including oxygen therapy, in case of crises.
