Sunjay Kapur's Funeral Delayed: Karisma Kapoor’s Ex-Husband Was A US Citizen, Legal Hurdles Stall Repatriation

Karisma Kapoor’s ex-husband Sunjay Kapur’s funeral is delayed due to legal formalities in London. The 53-year-old industrialist died during a polo match.

Prominent businessman and polo enthusiast Sunjay Kapur, former husband of Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, tragically passed away at the age of 53 in London on Thursday. Kapur reportedly suffered a heart attack during a polo match, with media reports suggesting the incident might have been caused by a bee sting he accidentally ingested, leading to fatal suffocation.

Sunjay’s unexpected demise has sent shockwaves across business and entertainment circles, with many remembering him as a charismatic figure with an intense passion for both motorsports and polo.

Repatriation delayed due to US citizenship

According to a report, the process of bringing his mortal remains to India is currently underway but could be delayed due to his U.S. citizenship. “The postmortem is currently underway. Once the paperwork is complete, the body will be brought to India for the last rites," reported NDTV.

The final rites are expected to take place in Delhi, once the procedural formalities are concluded.

Sunjay Kapur personal life

Sunjay Kapur was the Chairman of Sona Comstar Ltd., a major name in the auto components industry. He married Karisma Kapoor in 2003 and had two children—Samaira (2005) and Kiaan (2011). The couple separated in 2014, with the divorce finalised in 2016.

After the divorce, Sunjay went on to marry model and entrepreneur Priya Sachdev. The couple met in New York and tied the knot in a private Delhi ceremony after five years of courtship. They have a son, Azarias Kapur.

Sunjay’s last online words and support for Air India tragedy victims

Just days before his sudden passing, Sunjay had shared a motivational quote on social media:“Progress demands bold choices, not perfect conditions. #MondayMotivation.”

The quote further read:“Your time on Earth is limited. Leave the ‘what ifs’ to the philosophers and instead dive headfirst into the ‘why nots’.”

His final post came just hours before the tragic event, where he mourned the Air India crash:

“Terrible news of the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected.”

Family and friends offer support to Karisma Kapoor

Following the heart-wrenching news, several Bollywood celebrities including Kareena Kapoor Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Malaika Arora, and Amrita Arora were seen visiting Karisma’s residence to offer emotional support during this difficult time.
