New Delhi: Independence Day 2023 celebrations have begun with full fervour across the country. As PM Modi hoisted the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi, festivities began across the country. As dignitaries and important figures shares special wishes with the fans, Bollywood celebrities and others from the film industry have begun pouring wishes for their fans and in general.
This year's Independence Day holds special significance as it culminates the 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav', a journey of remembrance and celebration launched by Prime Minister Modi in March 2021. This is also Narendra Modi's 10th speech straight and the one before the next general elections.
The Prime Minister started the day by inspecting the Guard of Honour at the Red Fort.
The unfurling of the National Flag by the Prime Minister was accompanied by a spectacular display of flower petals being showered at the venue, executed by two Advanced Light Helicopters Mark-III Dhruv of the Indian Air Force in the Line Astern Formation.
Independence Day marks the momentous occasion in Indian history celebrating India's independence from the United Kingdom on August 15, 1947. This was the day when the provisions of the Indian Independence Act were trasferred to the Indian Constituent Assembly.
India retained King George VI as head of state until its transition to a republic, when the COnstitution of India came into effect on January 26, 1950.
India attained independence following the Poorna Swarag movement noted for largely non-violent resistance and civil disobedience led by Indian National Congree undre the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.
Unfortunately, the Independence conincided with the partition of British India into Dominions of Inda and Pakistan. This partition was accompanied by violent riots and mass casualties and till today marks the biggest migration in world history. A displacement of 15 mlillion happened due to the religious violence.
On August 15, 1947, the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru raised the Indian National Flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi.
