HBO confirmed the casting following a global search that drew over 30,000 aspiring actors after an open call launched last autumn. Filming is slated to kick off this summer.
“After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there,” showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod said in a joint statement.
While the trio of newcomers may not yet be household names, their previous performances show promise. McLaughlin will appear in the upcoming Sky comedy Grow, alongside Nick Frost and Golda Rosheuvel. Stanton recently portrayed the titular role in Matilda: The Musical on London’s West End from 2023 to 2024. For Stout, this marks his first significant acting credit.

Joining them in the reimagined halls of Hogwarts are some seasoned actors: John Lithgow as Professor Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Professor Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as caretaker Argus Filch.
The series is helmed by Gardiner, who also serves as showrunner and executive producer. Mylod, known for his work on Succession, will direct multiple episodes and executive produce. The project is being developed by HBO in collaboration with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.
J.K. Rowling returns as an executive producer, alongside Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman, who produced the original Harry Potter films under Heyday Films.
As the cast steps into roles that launched Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint to global stardom over two decades ago, expectations are high for this new take on J.K. Rowling’s magical universe.
